Gordon Food Service challenged students in the Nutrition and Food Science pathways at Douglas County High School and New Manchester High School to a culinary competition at their Douglasville distribution center in May, 2017. Students were required to prepare three dishes (appetizer, entrée, dessert) that included the secret ingredient “corn.” Their dishes were judged by Chef Veronica from The Vine restaurant in Douglasville, Chef Scott from Gordon Food Service, and Doug McBrayer, General Manager at Gordon Food Service. The dishes were presented and judged based on execution, appearance, and taste. The overall winner was Shermar Frazier from New Manchester High School.

The Nutrition and Food Science classes are part of the Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) curriculum available in all high schools in Douglas County. Gordon Food Service partnered with the Douglas County School System during the 2016-2017 school year. Students made visits to the business to learn about careers in the food industry including sales and marketing, distribution, and culinary. The culinary competition served as a culminating event for the classes. Gordon Foods plans to continue the partnership with the school system for the upcoming school year and hopes to once again host the “Iron Chef” competition. Food Science teachers Mikella Rutter from Douglas County High School and Shaughna Robinson from New Manchester High School coached the students in the competition.
